NAM Youth Marketing was featured in an article recently by Sports Events Magazine—a magazine dedicated to helping planners of sporting events and competitions become more successful. Here’s an excerpt of the questions I was asked for the article with my responses:
1. What are the major challenges of getting millennials’ attention?
Technology plays a significant role in millennials’ lives and causes their values to rapidly change. For instance, smartphones and social networking allow millennials to connect with friends without leaving home. This challenges industries that historically relied on more-active participation. These businesses must now reimagine how to capture the attention of increasingly distracted and electronically connected youths.
Why do you think American football is losing ground with college students?
This article explains some of the reasons why American football is losing ground with college students, including changes in technology, new forms of entertainment, bad publicity, and the concussion epidemic.
A major problem college football teams face is declining student interest and attendance at football games. This is worrisome because it could reflect future trends in viewership among the youth population at both the college and professional level. Attracting millennials’ attention is critical in maintaining the popularity of the sport, so it’s important to analyze the different factors that are influencing this shift in behavior in order to determine ways in which this trend can be reversed.
Consider college event marketing when advertising to students. Though technology plays an essential role in college students lives, it may not be the best method for reaching college students as they prefer event marketing and sampling promotions over digital ads.
College Students Relationship with Technology
It’s widely known that college students and the youth are hooked on technology. On any given day, you can walk around college campuses nationwide and see students engaged with multiple tech gadgets. According to a recent study conducted by re:fuel, college students own “an average of 6.9 gadgets per student”. This is not surprising given how interconnected our society is becoming with technology.
College students are highly receptive to technological advances and they don’t like to waste time. QR code advertising appeals to them, if they understand the benefit of utilizing this technology.
QR Codes are a great way to enhance your college marketing campaign, especially when advertising to students. QR codes are becoming increasingly popular and recognizable by consumers and are a great way to instantly convey product information to the prospective buyer. However, college students are a finicky bunch when it comes to scanning QR codes. There needs to be a benefit that they receive by scanning the QR code—such as a coupon or free item—that they can’t get anywhere else.
By combining technology and on-campus marketing techniques, your company can develop an effective college advertising plan catering to students’ love of multitasking.
With any advertising campaign, it is important to truly know your target audience. This is particularly important when advertising to students, as they can be the most critical of advertising. How do they spend their time? What forms of media do they engage with? What are their dreams, motivations, and interests? These are essential questions that must be answered before developing a college marketing plan.
