Advertise to College Students via College Newspapers

college newspaper advertising

Use college newspapers as a way to reach the college market.

Though print media readership among college students is generally on the decline, college students still stay tuned and frequently read their college newspapers. They use their collegiate newspaper as a way to stay in touch with the activities on campus, as well as the achievements of their peers. It’s also a great way to find out what entertainment and events are going on in a given week. Many local businesses use college newspapers to advertise to college students about upcoming events and deals. For example, this week in FSView—Florida State’s College Newspaper—Mockingbird Café is advertising for Whiskey Wednesday, The Warehouse is advertising for Open Mic Night, and AJ’s is advertising for a Karaoke Dance Party. These are just a few of the advertisements in the newspaper. What college students like about this type of advertising is that it doesn’t feel like advertising, rather they see it as a helpful reminder of the cool stuff happening around town. Plus it’s on print which means they can cut out the calendar section of the newspaper and hang it on their fridge as a reminder of what’s going on—which many college students actually do.

Ways Not to Advertise to College Students

Ways Not to Advertise to Students

Learn about ways not to advertise to college students, in order to avoid college marketing mistakes. Don’t make these mistakes when advertising to students.

These forms of advertising should be avoided at all cost when trying to reach the college market.

1. Telemarketing:

The majority of college students don’t have landlines and even if they do they rarely ever answer them. If it is someone they know calling them, they will also try their cell phone. I know that even when a landline was included in my rent, I unplugged it due to the sheer volume of calls I received from telemarketers. Even if you try calling college students’ cell phones they most likely won’t answer an unfamiliar number. It’s easy to ignore a call and if it’s something important the caller will leave a message. So when advertising to college students stay away from telemarketing. Text message marketing on the other hand is a highly effective form of advertising when trying to reach the college market.

Reaching College Students Using Text message Advertising and Mobile Apps

Reaching College Students Using Text message Advertising

A great way to advertise to college students is to use text message advertising and mobile apps.

1. Text message advertising:

College students constantly have their cell phones on them, even when they are in class the majority admits to texting. According to “a new Ball State University text messaging has far eclipsed e-mail and instant messaging as college students’ favored way of staying in touch.” Texting is a quick and easy way to communicate and since it is their favored form of communication it is a great way to advertise to them. Since college students don’t check their e-mail as regularly as they text, advertisements via e-mail can be a bit overwhelming and more likely to be ignored. Text messages on the other hand must be looked at. Many universities recognizing students’ dependence on text messaging have started communicating to students via this format. Businesses like wise should use text message advertising to reach the youth market.

How to Effectively Advertise to College Students

Want to find a cheap and easy way to reach college students? It’s easy let them advertise for you and create a viral word of mouth marketing campaign.

There are many different advertising strategies designed to target the college market, but one of the most effective ways to capture the youth market is by creating hype in a product. College students are constantly judging their peers and comparing themselves to one another. Oftentimes what is cool is defined by the number of people participating, displaying, or talking about a given product, thing, or event. No one wants to be the lone one not participating or the last in the know. So if you could get a few people to think your product is worth having, the desire for the commodity could spread to a larger percentage of the student body. The use of visual aids in addition to a viral word of mouth marketing strategy is a perfect way to market to college students.
