NAM Youth Marketing was featured in an article recently by Sports Events Magazine—a magazine dedicated to helping planners of sporting events and competitions become more successful. Here’s an excerpt of the questions I was asked for the article with my responses:
1. What are the major challenges of getting millennials’ attention?
Technology plays a significant role in millennials’ lives and causes their values to rapidly change. For instance, smartphones and social networking allow millennials to connect with friends without leaving home. This challenges industries that historically relied on more-active participation. These businesses must now reimagine how to capture the attention of increasingly distracted and electronically connected youths.
One of the biggest college marketing mistakes professionals and agencies make is believing that they understand the college market. Don’t make this college marketing mistake when advertising to students!
Why Marketing Professionals Believe They Understand the College Demographic
Oftentimes, marketers mistakenly believe they understand the college market. This can happen for a couple of reasons, the first being that they specialize in marketing to millennials. Millennials are a hot topic in marketing today and tons of research have been conducted on this niche market. However, the college demographic (18-24 year olds) is a specialized segment within this niche group and needs to be treated as such, as their desires, motivations, consumer behavior, and lifestyle habits vary greatly from other millennial groups.
College postering remains relevant in college marketing. Print remains an effective advertising medium in reaching students on college campuses.
Why College Postering Remains Relevant in College Advertising
When brands and companies think of advertising to students, they often think of digital advertising. After all, students spend a lot of their time online, on social media, and on their smartphones. This coupled with the fact that print advertising is declining makes most marketers look toward digital and experiential mediums, and while these platforms can be highly successful, print shouldn’t be overlooked when advertising to students.
College marketing gives brands the opportunity to reach college students where they study, live, work, and play. Promote your brand at high-traffic events where college students go for entertainment, such as sporting events, fraternity and sorority gatherings, and music festivals.
Use College Marketing to Reach College Students Where they Play
Reach College Students at Sporting Events
Everyone knows that college sports play a prominent role in college students’ lives. In fact, some people decide where to go to college based on the school’s sports team. A student at Ohio State University says in the New York Times article, How Big-Time Sports Ate College Life, “It’s not something I usually admit to, that I applied to Ohio State 60 percent for the sports. But the more I do tell that to people, they’ll say it’s a big reason why they came, too.” This kind of loyalty and fandom only increases when they become students and are officially a part of the school community.
College marketing gives brands the opportunity to reach college students where they study, live, work, and play. Employers, graduate and professional schools, and other organizations looking to increase applicants can reach college students where they work.
Use College Marketing to Reach College Students Where they Work
Reach College Students on the Job
A great way for recruiters to reach their target audience is by advertising to students at work. Most colleges offer some form of work study for qualifying students on campus. On-campus employers tend to give preference to student applicants applying for work-study programs in their field. For example, preference is often given to a biology major for an assistant biologist position.
College marketing gives brands the opportunity to reach college students where they study, live, work, and play. Student brand ambassadors have access to all areas on campus granted to students and can deliver your ad into the hands of college students.

1. Reach Students with Classroom Announcements
Classroom announcements are an excellent way to reach a large group of college students because you have a captive audience of targeted students. This means you can deliver your message to a receptive crowd and not waste advertising dollars. Classroom announcements are approved by the professor beforehand, which gives the brand/program credibility because the professor deems it worthy of an announcement.
